Most of us who have experienced complex trauma learned to dissociate from our bodies at a very young age.  We learned to not feel what was happening within us.  We learned to not hear the cries of our muscles, our skin, our organs.  We learned to live outside ourselves, to view ourselves from beyond. 

This is an amazing skill, and frankly it kept us alive.  Feeling our bodies during our traumatic experiences would have been too overwhelming and because these experiences were chronic and kept occurring it was easier, and honestly smarter, to live outside ourselves all the time and not only during the traumatic events.
