It is true that we have lost much because of the traumatic events we have experienced. Yet this loss, the loss of what could have been yet never was, is seldom acknowledged. There is an innocence lost. There is a death of a piece of who we were and who we could have become if we hadn't experienced the trauma.
We get to claim these losses.
We get to claim the grief that goes with these losses.
We get to claim the love we have for ourselves, the love we have for those parts of ourselves we lost, the love we have for the young person who suffered.
