Disengaging from Capitalism/Gemini New Moon 2026
Resources for (re)connection to Self, community, the planet, the cosmos
Disengaging from the systems of harm is a slow, tedious, intentional, and sometimes scary process. It means rejecting the “rules” society has set for “acceptable” behavior. It means putting ourselves at risk of judgement, of not being able to access and receive the “benefits” that come with following the made up rules. It means being different. It means standing out. It means discomfort.
This is a large part of why people don’t disengage. We humans have grown very accustomed to our creature comforts.
One of my questions over the last few years as dictators have sent down new rules and requirements to federal agencies, is “Why are they listening and doing what the dictators say?” Those in power, in many ways, only have as much power as we give them. For example, what would have happened if when, here in the US, there was a mandate to remove historically accurate signs from our national parks, the park rangers just said No. and didn’t remove or replace the signs? People likely would have lost their jobs, true. And what if their replacements also refused to change the signs? Then what?
The systems of harm bank on our fear of loss of belonging, they prey on our desperate need to be accepted, and feed us propaganda about what it means to be a “good, upstanding citizen” that ultimately only benefits those in power.
One of the subsystems created to keep us in line, and in perpetual debt, is credit rating. While businesses have had systems of rating other businesses for commerce for over a century, it was only in mid last century that they starting rating non-business consumers. It wasn’t until 1989 that FICO scores came into effect, standarizing the credit rating systems. This number now controls our ability, or lack of ability, to buy or rent a home, buy or lease a car, get a line of credit, even get a student loan. (Noting that lines of credit and student loans are tools in and of themselves to get and keep us in debt).
We “earn” or keep a “good” credit rating by paying our credit cards, mortages, and car leases or payments on time. Rent payments are not part of credit scores. Medical payments are not part of our credit scores. Utility payments are not part of our credit scores. Paying in cash for anything is not part of our credit score. The only way to impact our credit score, is by going into debt and then making payments on that debt.
I think it is important to note also, that FICO scores were standarized as divorce rates were studily increasing and more single women, and single mothers, were seeking credit, buying cars and or houses, and going back to college to increase their earning potentional and amassing student debt. Coincidence?
The systems within the systems of harm, created to keep us inline, obeient, compliant, and complict, are assumed. And like much of the rules under these systems, they only work if enough of us follow them.
So I am left again asking - Why are we following them? Why do we pay back loans that are predetory? Why do we pay exorbanent interest on loans to the point we never actually pay down the principal? And what would happen if we just stopped? What would happen if we just stopped paying our credit cards, our student loans? (I want to note here that our need for these loans is a predetory practice - if we could all afford our basic needs (which includes food, clothing, housing, transportation) with our wages, we wouldn’t need credit or loans in the first place).
I know if we stopped paying our housing or car payments that we can lose those things. And while there are plenty of predetory loans out there for these things, and while I strongly and firmly believe housing and transportation should be free and are a human right, I also acknowledgle that becoming houseless or carless in the world right now is not a good or great option.
And what if we started where they can’t do much to us except affect our made up credit score? What if we stopped paying into the systems that keep them working? What if we stopped being complicit and compliant to our own debt and stress in this way? What could they do besides give us a bad credit rating? And does that rating actually matter? It’s made up. It’s a construct. It’s a way to keep the wealthy, wealthy, the poor, poor, and the working class fighting itself because of this (false) sense of lack and scarity.
I’m not saying what you should or shouldn’t do. I am asking questions. I am inviting us all to look at our indoctrination and the ways we have (still) bought into the systems of harm and are still following the rules that don’t actually benefit us in any real way.
A truth is, we wouldn’t need “credit” if food, clean water, and housing were things we didn’t have to pay for or at the least were affordable. A truth is, the extreme cost of everything right now is on purpose - to keep us struggling, to keep us trying to figure out to survive under the systems so we don’t have the time, energy, or creativity to find our ways of existing outside of them. A truth is, if enough of us stopped playing by enough of the rules, the system would falter and crumble.
And. Not everyone is ready to just stop paying our credit cards or student loans. So what are some other smaller things we can do?
Grow our own food. This doesn’t mean you have to have a garden full of fruits and veggies and or a flock of chickens. Start, perhaps, with growing one herb in a container on your windowsill. Basil seems to do well inside, and can be used in so many different recipes. A couple years ago I started growing basil and mint in pots inside and we used both regularly (the basil in cooking, the mint to make tea) and now am in a house and growing potatoes and cherry tomatoes in grow bags this year (which could also be done on a balcony of an apartment if facing the right direction to get enough sunlight) and prepping parts of the yard for raised beds that will be built this year and planted in next - my point being you can start small and who knows where life may take you).
Mend clothes instead of replacing or use the fabric to make something else.
Delete all those screenshots. You know, the emotional support screenshots that you take and then never look at again? Those. Those screenshots live in “the cloud” which isn’t a magical mythical place, but is a server in a data center. The less photos, documents, and screenshots we store on the cloud, the less space they take on servers, the fewer servers needed, the fewer data centers being built. (I recently deleted 10,000 screenshots from my phone. I didn’t even stop to look at them (mostly), just mass deleted.)
Socialize at home, in a park, at the beach. Instead of going out to a restaurant, cook a meal for your friends, or host a potluck, go for a walk together, share house projects together (I know for me and my ADHD sometimes just having someone present while I do things is helpful, and sometimes I need someone else to help me get started because of overwhelm). Do something “free” to socialize instead of spending money. I’ve been doing this more and more with my friends and family. It also helps my neurospicy brain not get so overwhelmed as it can get in a restaurant or other noisy venue.
Take up a craft, create art or doodle, play solitaire with an actual deck of cards, play a board game, do a crossword puzzle from a book of puzzles, put together a jigsaw puzzle… (you get the idea), instead of scrolling or playing games on your phone. I’ve been working on this myself too. It’s been fun to create things just to create them.
Do certain tasks with the moon phases or sun cycles to help reconnect with natural, instead of man-made, rhythms. For example, every new moon I wash my sheets and deep clean my bathroom, every equinox and solstice I wash all my bedding (blankets, mattress cover, pillows) and rotate my mattress. What household tasks can you tie to the rhythm of the moon or sun?
There are dozens, if not hundreds, of sites and accounts to help you detach from the various apps and the companies that seem to have a grip on our lives. I would invite you to do your own research and see where you can start or take the next step in detaching from the systems of harm.
These systems only work because of our compliance. Our compliance exists mostly because we are so afraid of discomfort. But discomfort is part of the human experience. Discomfort opens the doors for our growth: emotional, psychological, and spiritual. Discomfort actually can lead us to greater contentment, joy, and peace.
Change is uncomfortable. A downfall of our current society is that we are taught being uncomfortable is to be avoided at all costs, no matter what, no matter who may suffer because of it. Learning to do new things, different things, unconventional things is often uncomfortable, and this discomfort is necessary if we are to co-create the world we all deserve.
This Gemini New Moon is an excellent opportunity to get into our own minds and really start to question the things we do, the ways we may be complicit, the ways we could do and be different. Our rituals and observances of the lunar phases or solar seasons don’t have to be big, or even productive. Simply acknowling the phase of the moon, and if you want to get really fancy it’s position in the astrological sky, can be a part of your own detatchment from and dislodging of the systems of harm that are breaking all our backs.

As Pluto is currently retrograde in my third house, and Uranus just entered my seventh, how I am approaching this space and others is evolving. Witchy Sh!t, and our connection to the rhythms of other parts of nature are still an important part of this, however this is also evolving and shifting. I’m still feeling it all out and I don’t know where it is all going just yet, so stay tuned!
